Wikstrom’s
involvement has moved some of the largest and most complex Superfund
sites in the nation from stagnation to productivity. We have success
in combining protection of human health and the environment with opportunities
for economic development and community enhancement. Wikstrom prepared
a reuse plan, adopted by Anaconda-Deer Lodge County, Montana, to allow
for the redevelopment of the Anaconda Smelter Superfund Site. This is
the first real step moving this 40,000 acre Superfund site toward productive
use since it was first listed on the National Priorities List in 1983.
The County and Wikstrom are actively working with potential developers
to bring new uses to the Superfund properties. The only other notable
clean up in Anaconda was the construction of the “Old Works” golf
course completed in 1993. Redevelopment had been identified as the remedy,
but no clear plan had been established for accomplishing redevelopment.
New capital investment in Anaconda will be a reality as a result of the
Reuse Guidelines and related agreements.
